Re: Close The Immigrant Success Gap, Michael Ignatieff and Maurizio Bevilacqua, Sept. 17.
The Liberal MPs' comments on immigration are nothing more than demagoguery and fear-mongering. Any de-bate must include cold hard facts: Fact In 1993, the backlog in immigration was 50,000. After 13 years of Liberal government it hit 800,000. Under the Liberal system, applications took six years to be processed -- if left unchanged this would have hit 10 years by 2012. For Conservatives, this is unacceptable.
Fact Last year Stephen Harper's government welcomed 429,649 immigrants, the most in Canadian history. Fact The Liberals imposed a tax on immigrants that cost a family of four almost $2,000. Stephen Harper cut it in half.
Fact The Conservative plan addresses the needs of employers faced with skilled labour shortages. The Liberals support a system with a six-year backlog, pleasing only one group: immigration lawyers.
Fact The new Conservative measures will also benefit Canadians in areas such as health care, allowing the fast-tracking of accreditation for doctors and nurses.
Fact The Liberals rose in support of the bill-- after Mr. Bevilacqua said that he was opposed to it.
These facts speak volumes about the difference between Conservatives and Liberals.
Richard T. Lorello, Conservative Party of Canada candidate, Vaughan, Ont.
