There are few formalities that you have to comply with. You have to apply for your Social Insurance Number. This is a number that will identify you to Canadian authorities for the rest of your life.
You will have to open a bank account. It is important to do so as soon as possible. You will have to build your credit history. Request a secured credit card - most of the banks will do it. If you encounter any problem at the bank, ask for a supervisor. Ideally, your friend or relative will go with you and help you with the process.
You will need to apply for health coverage. In most provinces, you will have to wait 2-3 months before you will be eligible for the coverage. It is advisable to buy health insurance in your home country to cover you during this waiting period.
Under Canada's national health insurance system, Canadian residents do not have to pay the cost of certain hospital and medical expenses. However, depending on the province or territory in which you are working, you or your employer may be required to pay to be covered by the insurance plan. Once in Canada, contact the medical care or hospital insurance office in the province or territory where you live for more information about your health insurance and who pays for it. You may do your homework before you arrive to Canada.
You will need to find an apartment where you make your new home. This can be a real challenge. Most rental managers will require references, proof of employment, sufficient deposit to ensure that you can afford to pay the rent. Again, without friends or relatives, you will find that it is not easy.
The last but most important thing you will have to face is finding a job. You may have some savings but you don't really want to start spending it immediately. If you are well prepared, you will know what your chances are to find the job of your dreams right away. If you are aware that it will take some time or that you will have to take some courses to be able to work in your profession, you may want to think about taking temporary job that would pay your bills. Many immigrants started that way and worked their way through the obstacles and handicap of being new in the country.
