More than 130,000 students come to study in Canada every year. In addition to this number are many more that come to Canada to learn English or French.
You do not need a Study Permit if you are planning to take a course or program in Canada with a duration of six months or less. You must complete the course or program within the period authorized for your stay in Canada. But if you plan on continuing your education after improving your English skills or completing the first program, you should apply for student permit even if you don't have to before you arrive to Canada. If you study without study permit, and you want to enrol in any secondary or post-secondary program, you will have to leave Canada and apply at the visa office responsible for your country of residence.
Student permit is a temporary permit. It is therefore very important that the visa officer must be satisfied that the applicant will leave Canada after she/he completes the studies. The refusal rate of student permits is high because it really is not easy to prove the intent to return. In addition to the supporting documents that the CIC lists in their check list, there is a number of documents that you should include with your application to improve your chances to be approved.
Foreign students in Canada must pay international tuition fees. These fees are usually 3- to 4-times higher than those for Canadian residents. The tuition fees vary from province to province. Some provinces also offer its students generous terms if they decide to stay in the province and apply for permanent residence.
